After 72 years of tackling supervillains as a straight man, DC Comics's magical-ring-wearing superhero the Green Lantern, one of the publisher's oldest and most established characters, is set to be reintroduced as gay. After DC's publisher Dan DiDio let slip at a comics convention last week that one of DC's major superheroes was to come out as gay, the comics world has been speculating wildly about who the superhero would be. Some believed Wonder Woman might have been hiding a secret under her tiara; others pointed at caped crusader Batman, who has long enjoyed a close relationship with his sidekick, Robin. But DC announced that Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern who made his debut in , was to be reintroduced as gay next week.

Now it has been announced that Alan Scott — the original Green Lantern who first appeared in and has been married twice — will be coming out in next week's issue of Earth 2. Rather than the Green lantern announcing his homosexuality, his back story has simply been rewritten to imply that he has always been gay.

Today, we are pleased to announce that the mystery about the identity of the character in question is over. A team leader with a Type-A personality and an appetite for justice, Alan also happens to be homosexual. Originally a Golden Age character whose previous continuity spanned from the s through modern times, Alan was a charter member of the Justice Society. It is also important to note that while Alan is a gay man, his sexuality is merely only one part of his multi-layered character.

Alan Scott , aka the original Green Lantern, will now be the main superhero for the "Earth 2" series which will be released online and in comic book stores on Wednesday—and he will be out of the closet.
